Ambulatory Care is staffed by a total of eight RNs and LPNs. The certifications of these nurses include Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nurse Specialist, and ACLS Instructor.

We are proud to say our department has expanded. Our new area now includes 11 outpatient beds, 2 endoscopy suites and 2 outpatient exam rooms.

Ambulatory Care Procedures

1. The same day surgery department of the Ambulatory Care unit allows the patient to have surgery and go home all in the same day.

  • Same Day Surgery - Some minor surgeries are performed in Ambulatory Care. Other surgical patients are cared for before and after their surgeries in Ambulatory Care, which allows for maximum care at a minimum cost.

2. The unit of Ambulatory Care has video, fiber-optic equipment in two new endoscopy suites, as well as a staff of registered nurses. This provides the patient quality care with a personal small town touch

    Colonoscopy
    EGD-Gastroscopy
    Sigmoidoscopy

  • Treatment - dressing changes

3. Intravenous Therapy (I.V. Therapy) is used to give some medicines such as antibiotics, to assist in healing.

  • I.V. Therapy - Antibiotic and Intravenous Therapy on an outpatient basis

4. Blood Transfusions - Patients receiving blood and/or blood products in Ambulatory Care are closely monitored during and after transfusions and discharged in the same day.

5. Specialty Clinics are offered one day a week depending on availability of a physician.

Oncology and Infusion Unit

Ambulatory Care has an outpatient oncology and infusion unit with five patient care areas staffed by RNs. The nurses provide outpatient care for chemotherapy patients, as well as other patients receiving medication or blood by IV infusion. Our goal is to provide compassionate holistic care.

In Oncology, we provide not only chemotherapy, but we monitor lab results, flush ports, and give injections. The nurse works closely with the patient and their oncologist, some as far away as St. Louis.

  • Outpatient Chemotherapy by registered nurses in an outpatient clinic setting
  • Injections and lab evaluations for outpatient oncology
The Ambulatory Care Department hours are Monday - Friday beginning at 6:00 a.m.

Procedures in the department require a physician referral.

NEW HOPE FOR PATIENTS WITH NON-HEALING WOUNDS

For over 5 million Americans a simple cut or a bruise can result in a chronic wound that can lead to serious infections, gangrene or even amputation.  It is estimated that there are over 1,800 patients with chronic wounds in the southern Illinois area alone.

For people with diabetes, poor circulation or long term immobilization a chronic wound can be a serious and life-altering medical condition.  But now there is hope.

On June 20, 2006, HMC opened a comprehensive program designed to treat and heal patients with non-healing wounds.

The Wound Care Clinic at Harrisburg Medical Center is a unique program specifically designed for each patient.  Under the direction of David Gunzel DPM, our team develops a treatment plan designed specifically for each patient.  The team includes Dr. Wroten McQuirter, Emergency Medicine; Linda Murphy RN, Program Manager; Emily Evans RN, Clinical Coordinator; Kim Millikan RN; and Pam Fitzpatrick LPN.

Harrisburg Medical Center Wound Care Clinic uses the latest advances in wound treatment.  In addition to a comprehensive treatment plan, the patients are educated on their medical condition, nutritional status and how to assist in the healing process and prevent future wounds.  We have a multi-disciplinary team for referrals in areas of infectious disease, vascular surgery, general surgery, and plastic surgery.
